Paid Internships and First-Jobs as Creative Youth Development

We gathered to discuss how Creative Youth Development (CYD) organizations are designing paid internships, peer leadership roles, and first-job experiences that equip young people with the skills, confidence, and connections they need for lifelong success.

Whether you run a CYD program, partner with youth-serving organizations, or are interested in youth employment and the arts, this event offered valuable perspectives on supporting young people’s growth and futures.

Featured Programs and Research

The Practical Producers Program at Beyond the Bars in Philadelphia prepares artists between the ages of 15-25 to teach music to their peers. Program graduates are paid instructors at over 40 music labs across the city teaching music to middle and high schoolers.

The Youth Employment Program at Community Music Center of Boston provides young people ages 14+ with flexible hourly employment and training in nonprofit arts administration. YEP participants work in the Advancement, Programs, and Finance & Operations Departments.

With a three decade legacy, YouthReach is a Mass Cultural Council signature grant program devoted to nurturing the creativity and leadership of young people across the state. In 2025, Mass Cultural Council began gathering data on grantees’ approaches to youth employment, and will share preliminary observations at our town hall.
